Latest Satellite Viewing Figures

Figures for the first full week of viewing to the newly launched satellite channels and Sky’s Multichannel paid-for package have been released by BARB.

Comparing the last full week of August, before the changes on 1st September, with the week ending 12th September it appears that Sky 1 encryption has lost it 1.4% of its total share of viewing and its average weekly hours viewed has declined 13.5%. Compared to the same week in 1992 Sky 1’s viewing share has only declined by 0.3% however and the average hours viewed have actually increased by a minute.

UK Gold’s share of viewing has slipped to 2.7% in the week ending 12th September from 3.8% in the week-ending 29th August, though its share a week prior to that was only 3.1% with weekly share hovering around the 2.7% mark for a lot of weeks in May and June of this year.

It is clear that the settle-down effect of new channel launches and the Sky multichannel package will not be clear for several months (there are still more channels to be launched later this year and early next Newsline 1/9).
