Lycos Links With BT To Promote Broadband

Lycos has secured a deal making BT Broadband the portal’s high-speed internet product of choice for its four million customers.

From next month Lycos will promote BT Broadband through a new channel specially created for broadband users. The portal will also strengthen its existing broadband offering with the launch of a range of new services designed to give users the “ultimate broadband experience.”

Additionally, Lycos UK will be positioned as a “Web Essentials” partner on the BT Broadband launch page, which directs users to useful content and services for the broadband platform when they first access the web through their high-speed connection.

BT and Lycos will also work together on joint marketing propositions, which will link the access and services elements of their respective businesses.

Commenting on the initiative, Alex Kovach, managing director of Lycos UK and Ireland, said: “This partnership with BT reinforces our position as the number one user-generated content site and enables Lycos UK to expand its current user-base to include the wider broadband market.”

Angus Porter, managing director of BT Consumer, added: “We see this latest partnership as an real opportunity for both Lycos and BT. It is an excellent example of our partnering approach – bringing affordable access and best of breed content to broadband users.”

The partnership is the latest stage in BT’s bid to sign up one million broadband internet customers by summer 2003. The initiative recently saw the telecomms company join forces with Sky to offer Sky digital customers discounted high-speed internet access (see BT Teams Up With Sky For Cut Price Broadband Promo).

Earlier this week rival internet service provider, Freeserve, lodged a complaint with communications regulator, Oftel, claiming that BT’s “near-monopoly” position will stifle broadband innovation and development in the UK (see Freeserve Files Complaint Against BT Broadband).
