Maiden Secures South East Trains Sales Contract

Maiden Outdoor has successfully retained the lucrative three-year rail advertising contract for South East Trains.
The deal includes the rights to sell a range of outdoor panels and posters at key stations along the South East line such as Waterloo East, Orpington, Bromley, Tonbridge, Lewisham and Sevenoaks.
The contract represents a key win for Maiden as South East Trains is the second largest train operating company in the UK. It runs approximately 1,700 trains a day with over 35% of rail commuters travelling to London via its network.
Commenting on the win, Maiden Outdoor managing director, David Pugh, said: “The retention of this major contract, together with First Great Western means that Maiden has now successfully renewed nearly 20% of the revenue value of its train company advertising business since early 2003.”
Maiden Outdoor’s core railway station business was dealt a blow last month after its seven-year advertising sales contract for GNER stations along the East Coast mainline was snatched by rival Viacom Outdoor (see Viacom Outdoor Swipes GNER Contract From Maiden).
The deal broke Maiden’s monopoly of the 26 outdoor media contracts in the UK’s railway stations. It is understood that the two companies are in the process of bidding for a number of contracts up for pitch, including Connex, Mersey Rail and Chiltern Railways.
The latest figures from the Outdoor Advertising Association show that the industry has been performing well recently with revenue increased by 6.6% year on year to more than £195 million in the three months to September 2003 (see Q3 Gain Makes Outdoor The UK’s Fastest Growing Medium).
