MPs Back Channel 4 Independence

A group of MPs from all parties is to table an early-day motion today calling on the Government to abolish the safety net which links Channel 4 with ITV and forces Channel 4 to pay subsidies of up to £50m a year to ITV. They claim that abolishing the safety net would allow Channel 4 to invest in more drama, children’s programming and British films.

Michael Grade and Sir Michael Bishop, Channel 4’s chairman, are to meet with Peter Brooke, the National Heritage secretary, tomorrow and urge for legislation about Channel 4 to be added to forthcoming broadcasting legislation.
