Overall it was a poor month for the national newspaper industry with just five titles showing year on year increases in readership – four of these were broadsheets. The Sunday Telegraph led the way with an increase of almost 15% year on year to 2.36 million while the Guardian rose over 6% to 1.346 million. The Independent however lost 163,000 readers, down 17% to 782,000 while its sister title fell 11% year on year to 889,000. In the mid market only the Daily Mail saw an increase in readers, up 4.7% to 5.386m, while the Express On Sunday suffered the second largest year on year drop (behind the Independent) with a loss of 562,000 readers (16%) to 2.932m. The two Mirror titles performed the worst in the popular market, with the Mirror ‘s readership dropping 8.5% to 6.014m and the Sunday Mirror falling 10.2% to 6.527 million. The Sun fell 2.8% year on year to 9.849m.
