Netflix has boosted its catalogue by 18.2% in the latest quarter, significantly ahead of other major streamers, according to Nielsen’s content data arm Gracenote.

Apple TV+ grew its catalogue by 3.7%, followed by Amazon Prime Video at 3.2%. Growth among Disney+ and Paramount+’s catalogues was even slower at 1.6% and 1% respectively, data from Gracenote Data Hub covering February to May show.

Overall, the total number of TV shows, films and pieces of sports content available on the top five subscription VOD (SVOD) platforms was up by 4,500, or 5%.

Netflix’s strong growth means it now accounts for 20.1% of all content across the major SVOD services, compared with 17.9% in the previous quarter.

Three players rule sports

Delving into types of content, sport was the big winner, with the top five streamers increasing their content in this genre by 7.8%.

This was almost twice the rate of growth for films and one percentage point higher than TV shows.

Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Netflix together are responsible for 92% of all sports content.

Netflix, in particular, invested heavily in this area. While Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ increased their sports content by 5% or less, Netflix increased its content by 22.1%.

Pointing to the continued strong growth in available content, Gracenote chief product officer Bill Michels stressed that “effective content discovery helps streamers connect viewers to the entertainment they’ll enjoy most and get the most value out of each of the assets in their catalogues”.
