New Big Breakfast – Still A Way To Go
The first full week’s figures for the ‘new’ Big Breakfast, whilst showing reach up 1.1m to 6.5m and peak quarter hour viewing up 100,000 to 0.7m, indicate that the programme has a very long way to go to achieve the heady heights of 1994, with peak quarter hour audiences of 1.9m, and weekly reach of 9.2m. Year on year the peak quarter hour figure is half that of 1995, whilst reach is down 23%:

On a brighter note, C4’s Friday night comedy slot continues to perform well with Friends taking the top programme position with 5.07million viewers – one of the best performances so far this year for the channel.
Two new BBC programmes have made it into the top 30 programmes, the drama/comedy ‘The Hello Girls‘ and factual ‘X-Cars’. Other repeat series making an appearance include; ‘Dangerfield’, ‘Soldier Soldier’, ‘Tarrant on TV’ and ‘999 Lifesavers’.
Overall hours viewed have decreased year on year by just over an hour, with ITV and BBC1 losing most. In terms of share of viewing amongst individuals ITV remain ahead of BBC1 despite losing 1.7% points on last year, whilst BBC2, C4 and ‘Others’ have all shown improvements.
Viewing in Astra homes has also fallen overall year on year, and whilst two new channels have appeared on the weekly listings – Sky Two (0:08)and Sky Sports 3 (0:21) – Total Sky viewing has still dropped by 44 minutes.
