New TV Audience Measurement System

Statistical Research Incorporated, an American company, has developed some new solutions to measuring television audiences. The S*M*A*R*T project has created a completely new measurement system, from sample selection through to data reporting and is currently in place and operational in a test research laboratory in Philadelphia.

At a time when many of Europe’s television audience measurement contracts are under review, including the UK contract, it is expected that the new research may raise serious questions about the future of peoplemeter systems.

The new methods of TV measurement will be presented at the 1995 European Television Symposium this November in Barcelona, which will include an account of the establishment of the Philadelphia panel and on what has been learnt so far.
