NTL To Provide Multiplex Space For New ITV Channels

Cable operator NTL’s broadcast division has secured the contract to uplink ITV’s television signals to a fourth and fifth satellite transponder, giving the broadcaster more space for its planned digital channels, increased control over the broadcast of regional content and capacity for more interactive services.

ITV currently broadcasts via three transponders to provide its digital satellite services, all operated by an NTL uplink which opened in November 2001. The fourth multiplex is expected to go live this month, with the fifth due next March.

The new deal gives ITV, the nation’s largest commercial broadcaster, a ten year contract with NTL for multiplex and uplink services, providing space for new digital channels, the bandwidth to create more rich media interactive services and the ability for further regional variation to its broadcasts.

Commenting on the deal, Simon Thrush, head of satellite and playout at NTL’s media solutions group, said: “ITV is of course one of our biggest customers and we re delighted to support the development of their digital satellite offering. DTH transponder space is in short supply, so it’s good to know that ITV has the necessary capacity for its current and planned services.”

Mick Desmond, CEO of ITV Broadcast added: “It’s important that our full range of services is available as widely as possible and we’re delighted to partner with NTL to expand our satellite transmissions.”

Earlier this week saw speculation arise surrounding ITV, with the broadcaster considering a complaint to Ofcom over the charges imposed by Sky for carrying and encrypting its television channels (see ITV Preparing Challenge To Sky’s Broadcast Fees).
