Ocean Outdoor has secured the first ever Outdoor advertising site in Trafalgar Square, with the company taking over a 9m x 9m site on the south-west aspect of St Martin-In-The-Fields.
Launching on 1 January 2007, Trafalgar Square Ocean Special will provide a significant contribution to the £36 million renewal of the church.
An estimated 35 million people a year, including 19.6 million visitors from outside London or overseas, visit Trafalgar Square. The square is said to have a footfall of 2.5 million a week.
Damian Cox, managing director of Ocean, said: “The potential of this site is still sinking in. It is the most exclusive site in London, the fastest moving and most diverse capital city in the world.
“It offers an unprecedented advertising opportunity and is another example of Ocean delivering unique, iconic sites to its clients. What’s more, it is helping to fund the renewal of one of London’s most important landmarks.”
Rev Nicholas Holtam, Vicar at St Martin’s, added: “The Renewal Project is the most significant work on this site since John Nash’s re-ordering of this part of London in 1828. It will allow us to continue our groundbreaking work in surroundings befitting their purpose.
“We thought long and hard about approaching Westminster Council with the idea of the billboard and, in the end, we decided that the pros far outweighed the cons. Westminster Council is one of St Martin’s strongest supporters and we are most grateful for the planning permission we have been granted. It will help fund a vital project.”
Advertising restrictions on the site include alcohol, tobacco, junk food and gambling.
