ONdigital And Demon Internet In TV Email Deal

Email by TV will soon be a reality after digital broadcaster ONdigital yesterday announced a partnership with Demon Internet. The deal will allow the broadcaster to offer its digital terrestrial television subscribers the ability to send and receive email messages while watching television, using a combined keyboard and remote control.
The service, which is expected to be launched by the end of the year, marks the first step in the company’s plans to develop more interactive services for the consumer, which will eventually include e-commerce services such as home shopping. ONdigital currently has 247,000 subscribers who will have to pay a small fee to obtain the remote control, said to be in the region of ‘tens of pounds’ according to a company spokesperson.
Demon Internet, which is owned by Scottish Telecom, is at present the second largest web host in the UK and recently signed a deal to provide internet service provision for the BBC (see Beeb Joins Up With Scottish Telecom To Launch Free ISP). After announcing the deal managing director Bill Allen said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with ONdigital. This service will have a major impact on the lives of customers and enable them to benefit quickly from the latest technology from the digital age.”
