Public Want Films And Documentaries For C5

Channel 5, the proposed fifth national television channel should show films and documentaries according to CIA Sensor, the fortnightly survey from CIA MediaLab. 500 adults were asked what type of programmes they wanted C5 to broadcast. Fifty percent said films, this was followed by documentaries, (43%) sport (29%), local programming (19%), quiz shows (14%), soap operas (12%), children’s programmes (10%), situation comedies (10%) and cartoons, (9%).

Films are a popular choice across the spectrum of ages, but there is a distinct generation split. Younger viewers (15 to 24 year olds) are the main voters for sit-coms, sport and soaps. Older viewers are more interested in watching documentaries and current affairs programmes. Viewers over 35 years old are more likely to want to see some local programmes.

Upmarket ABs, traditionally light television viewers, would like to see a wider range of programming with documentaries (56%), films (44%), current affairs (38%) and plays (37%), being the most popular. This group is also keen to see arts programmes (33%) and local output (24%).
