Radio Advertising Clearance Centre Offers Protection
Yesterday (1/7/96) saw the launch of The Radio Advertising Clearance Centre (RACC). Commercial radio’s advertising body ensures that radio advertisement scripts comply with the Radio Authority’s Advertising Code.
The RACC’s main task is to protect the listener from misleading and offensive advertisements. According to the Radio Advertising Code, special category advertisements, for example alcohol, medicines and charities, need to be checked and approved by an official organization before they can be broadcast.
Scripts sent in will be divided into categories so that each RACC clearance executive can offer more specialist and consistent advice. The RACC also have a Radio Copy Helpline for any general advertising queries with additional After-Hours and Weekend emergency clearance services.
Yvonne Kintoff, Advertising Clearance Manager for RACC commented:
“The RACC will be tailor-made to the needs of commercial radio. Our Overall goal is to get radio advertisements on air as swiftly but, most importantly, within the Code rules. We’ll justify our opinions and judgments always in the ears of the listener, while giving stations and agencies straightforward advice on how to bring their advertisement scripts within the code rules”.
The launch answers the radio stations call for a user friendly and facilitating clearance body that acknowledges the characteristics of radio while continuing the high standards of consumer protection.
