Radio Licences Awarded
The Radio Authority has announced details of local licences for the Birmingham area. The re-advertised licence on the FM waveband has been awarded to Choice FM Birmingham, replacing Buzz FM. The new AM licence has been awarded to Supa AM. Choice FM Birmingham will play soul and reggae music. Supa AM will be a service for the Asian community.
Both licences will run for eight years. Buzz FM’s contract expires on December 31 1994. The Radio Authority issued the following statement regarding Buzz FM’s loss; “Notwithstanding the efforts made by the new owners to stabilise an ailing station, the Authority believes that Choice FM Birmingham offered the strongest proposals for an FM service broadcasting to listeners in the Birmingham area.”

The re-advertised local licence for North London (Haringey) FM licence has been awarded to London Greek Radio. LGR is one of the existing licencees, with WNK Radio. However, yesterday afternoon at 4pm WNK had its licence revoked for failure to pay its licence fees. WNK was a service for the Afro-Caribbean community in Haringey. WNK used to broadcast for alternate four hour periods with London Greek Radio.
The AM licence for the area was awarded to Turkish Radio UK Ltd.

The ILR licence on the FM waveband for the Coventry area was also awarded to the existing licensee, Radio Harmony (Radio Coventry Ltd).

The ILR licences on the FM and AM wavebands for the Inverness area have also been awarded to the existing licensee, Moray Firth Radio LTd.

The ILR licence for Sunderland was re-awarded to Wear FM, the existing licensee.

The Radio Authority has also confirmed that Nevis Radio, for the Fort William area has secured the necessary funding and is therefore awarded to Nevis Radio. The new licence will run from commencement of broadcasting which should be later this year.
