Sky set to launch online subscription service

Sky Logo BSkyB is set to launch an online subscription service in the new few months, allowing customers to watch Sky channels via the internet.

The new service, which will be accessible to non Sky TV or Sky Broadband customers, will be available on the broadcaster’s VoD service Sky Player.

Sky plans to offer its sports channels on the online subscription service but other channels, such as Sky 1 and Sky Movies, have not yet been confirmed with the US content owners.

Speaking at the MediaGuardian Changing Broadcast Summit 2008, BSkyB’s chief operating officer, Mike Darcey, said: “We need to finalise decisions on price and finalise the channel proposition.”

He added: “Until now Sky Player has been a ‘bonus’ for existing Sky customers. This will continue but in its new guise there will also be access on PC for a dedicated subscription service.”
