Sky Take United From ITV/C4 Take NBA From Sky

Sky Sports has announced that it will have exclusive rights to Manchester United’s home matches in the 1995/6 UEFA Cup. Since English clubs were readmitted to European competition in 1990, all of Manchester United’s home matches have been shown on ITV.

Martin Edwards, Chairman of United, said; “We are delighted to sign this deal with Sky Sports. They obviously made a good financial offer, but just as significant was the amount of time they can devote to sport – their deal ensures that fans across the UK will see Manchester United live, for the whole 90 minutes, from the first round.”

This deal comes after Sky Sports lost exclusive rights to American Basketball to Channel 4. Sky held the contract for two years before the NBA awarded it to C4 to widen its audience. An NBA spokesman said: “NBA has been looking to have access to a broader coverage in the UK on terrestrial TV. That is something Channel 4 could do for us.”

Sky have decided to concentrate on British Basketball with a three-year deal for the rights to Budweiser League and Championships, 7-Up Trophy and All-Star game.
