Smash Hits Launches One-Off Quiz Special

Emap’s Smash Hits is to increase its profile in the run up to next month’s ABC results with the launch of a one-off Summer Quiz Special.

The 52-page spin-off title, which goes on sale on 13 August priced at £2.50, will feature more than 100 celebrity quizzes and will be covermounted with a special Smash Hits stationary set.

Commenting on the initiative, Nikki Causer, head of marketing for Smash Hits, said: “Research tells us our readers really value the quiz book in the regular magazine so we produced this special to keep them entertained over the long summer holidays. At just £2.50 it represents great value for money and is another product that helps make the Smash Hits brand an essential part of teen life.”

Smash Hits, which launched almost 25 years ago as the ultimate pop magazine for 10 to 17 years-olds, has raced a rough ride recently in the notoriously fickle teenage market. The latest ABC figures for the six months to December 2002 show the title has seen circulation decline by 10.8% year on year to 145,174 (see ABC Jul-Dec 2002: New Launches Shake-Up Teen Market).

The magazine has faced stiff competition from NatMag’s newly relaunched CosmoGIRL! (see CosmoGIRL! Relaunches With New Handbag Size), as well as from BBC Worldwide’s It’s Hot and Emap’s Sneak, which recently unveiled a national TV and radio advertising campaign to strengthen its position in the sector (see Emap Sneaks Phone Booths Into New National Ad Campaign).

However, Smash Hits spans a number of different platforms and earlier this year Emap launched Smash Hits digital radio on Freeview, in a move which underlined its commitment to the growth of the brand (see Emap Rolls Out New Digital Radio Stations On Freeview).
