TalkSPORT Nets Sponsor For Euro 2004 Coverage

Kelvin MacKenzies’s national talkSPORT radio station has secured a deal with skin care brand Nivea to become the exclusive on-air sponsor of its Euro 2004 coverage in a deal worth around £500,000.

The deal will see the cosmetics giant sponsor talkSPORT’s live match commentaries throughout the event, as well as supporting a range of promotions and features surrounding the tournament, both on air and on the station’s website.

Among the features and promotions planned under the deal are player profiles, a trivia competition, messages of support, e-mail bulletins, listener polls and a viral penalty shoot-out game on www.talksport.net.

Commenting on the deal, Ashley MacKenzie, national sales director for talkSPORT, said: “With so much quality coverage from Lisbon, talkSPORT is again the only real option for listeners and advertisers this Summer. We are proud to be sharing this amazing opportunity with our partner, Nivea For Men. C’mon Eng-ur-land!”

The deal was brokered by talkSPORT sponsorship group head Matt Wilson and Vicki Connerty of Carat Sponsorship. Nivea’s activity begins in May and runs for the duration of the tournament concluding with the Final on July 4.

Last month saw Tindle Radio Group become the latest broadcasting company to carry the Wireless Group’s Eurolink sports bulletins during Euro 2004. The deal adds Tindle’s six stations in Great Yarmouth, Jersey, Tendring, Chelmsford, Guernsey and Bridgend to the 80 radio stations nation-wide already signed up to the syndicated sports news spots (see Tindle Radio Signs For Eurolink Sport Bulletins).

TalkSPORT saw its weekly reach drop by 4.8% year on year to just over 2 million in the three months to March, according to the latest audience figures from RAJAR. However, the station managed to maintain some dignity with a 0.2% points increase in its share of listening during the same period.
