Television Violence Down

According to a leaked report in today’s press, the amount of violence on the four main television channels has dropped significantly.

The study, which was carried out by Barrie Gunter, head of research at Sheffield University’s department of journalism is to be completed within the next few days. It has been jointly funded by the BBC and the ITC.

It is understood to show that violence occupies 0.62% of the time on terrestrial channels, against 1.1% recorded in a similar study nine years ago.

Critics of the report have voiced concern over the criteria of violence within the report. One critic said that the report could be misleading. Another said “It lumps together acts of violence ranging from a child tripping over to a psychopath stabbing a victim. It is nonsense to suggest they are the same thing.”

According to an ITC spokeswoman the report is expected to be published in the next few weeks but as yet there is no firm date.
