The Syndicate’s winning streak continues on BBC One
Last night saw some juicy secrets finally come flooding out in the penultimate episode of Kay Mellor’s cursed lottery drama The Syndicate (BBC One, 9pm), with the third series continuing to prolong the show’s winning streak.
Following on from the success of the first two series (set in a supermarket and a hospital, respectively) the opening episode of the country manor- themed third series netted 5.4 million viewers five weeks back, easily matching previous ratings.
Yesterday’s fifth episode saw the staff of the troubled mansion house hurtle towards the end of their tale as Lenny Henry’s troubled groundskeeper Godfrey got some lovin’.
A total of 5 million viewers tuned in to learn the fate of Amy, a syndicate member who went missing mysteriously, resulting in a 26% share for BBC One and the biggest 9pm audience for the fifth week in a row.
On BBC Two, hip and happening Wimbledon 2day (8:30pm) slightly improved on the first day’s audience, jumping from 1.3 million viewers all the way up to 1.4 million (a 7% share) for last night’s catch up.
The mood was a lot more sombre over on ITV with The 7/7 Bombing: Survivors’ Stories (9pm), a harrowing account of the day 10 years ago with interviews from officials and survivors. 1.6 million viewers tuned in for the curiously early commemoration, resulting in an 8% share.
Meanwhile on Channel 5, OAPs Behaving Badly (9pm) entertained 730,000 lost souls, translating to a 4% share.
At the same time, those precocious cherubs and terrifyingly ambitious parents of Child Genius (9pm) returned to Channel 4 for a third outing as 20 young children were sent into the cerebral arena in a bloody and brutal battle to be crowned the bestest kid ever.
1.2 million viewers tuned in to be amazed and intimidated by the freakish levels of intelligence on display, mashed in with the usual tantrums and tears, resulting in a 6% share.
Earlier, Holby City (BBC One, 8pm) performed a little worse than usual with 3.8 million viewers and a 22% share getting their fix of medicine and emotions.
Elsewhere, the 8pm slot was chock-a-block with factual fun. On ITV, Alan Titchmarsh was busy rummaging through strangers’ bushes and hedgerows in the latest exciting instalment of Love Your Garden (8pm). An audience of 2.2 million viewers tuned in for the highly cost effective makeover show, resulting in a 13% share.
On Channel 4, Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners (8pm) brought in 1.2 million viewers while The Dog Rescuers with Alan Davies (8pm) was watched by 350,000 people on Channel 5.
At 7pm, Emmerdale (7pm) brought in ITV’s biggest audience of the day with 4.9 million viewers and a 31% share.
But it was BBC One’s EastEnders that claimed the top spot at 7:30pm as Carol Jackson decided to down a bottle of wine and roll around in the proverbial hay with Shirley Carter’s fella, Buster.
An audience of 5.8 million viewers watched as a vexed Shirley discovered a bra behind her sofa, leading to a classic kitchen sink showdown in the Jackson household, resulting in a 34% share.
