Rupert Murdoch, stung by increasing newsprint costs and steady circulations at his Today newspaper, has also announced he is to ease his financial burden by increasing the price of the Times from Monday. The daily will go up by 5p to 30p, and the Saturday edition will rise to 40p from next week.
It is now expected that the Daily Telegraph, currently at 35 pence, will follow suit. However, both titles still have a way to go to reach their pre- price war levels, of 45p for the Times and 48p for the Telegraph.
