Top Programmes For 1995 – Diana Reigns Supreme

Soaps

Coronation Street continues its stranglehold over the soap category with 64 episodes of the show appearing before the next best placed soap, which was the Eastenders episode broadcast on Tuesday February 21st which attracted 17.02 million viewers. The top rated Coronation Street episode was the one shown on Monday January 9th which was watched by 19.44 million people.

Film

Home Alone was the best film of 1995 pulling in 15.18 million viewers. The network premiere of Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston’s film The Bodyguard was the second best viewed film of 1995 attracting 13.28 million people. Channel 4’s premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral appears third on the list with an audience of 12.38 million.

Comedy

‘I don’t believe it’ One Foot In The Xmas Grave was the top rated comedy programme of the year attracting 17.77 million people to the Christmas day episode, over one million more people than the next best comedy, also shown on Christmas day, which was Keeping Up Appearances which got 16.73 million viewers. 2 Point 4 Children was third with the episode broadcast on Monday 23th October which got a total of 14.01 million viewers.

Light Entertainment

The National Lottery dominates the light entertainment category with 18 of the top 20 appearing on the list belonging to the BBC1 show. The best watched Lottery show was the one broadcast on March 25th and achieved an audience of 18.21 million. ITV’s best light entertainment show was You’ve Been Framed, which was shown on November 12th and was watched by 16.31 million viewers.

Drama

Heartbeat reigns supreme as the most popular drama on television with 8 out of the top 10 dramas being the Yorkshire television show, the best being the episode shown on November 19th attracting an audience of 18.67 million. The BBC1 drama series Casualty comes seventh on the list, with the edition broadcast on Saturday March 25th attracting 16.75 million viewers. Sport Only 5 sporting programmes managed to make any of the top 30 programme lists of 1995, the most watched one being Big Fight Live which was shown on 25th February and watched by 13.06 million.

Factual

Panorama’s controversial interview with Princess Diana is not surprisingly the top factual programme of 1995 getting a huge audience of 22.77 million; more than 8 million more than the next programme on the list, which was Antiques Roadshow with 14.01 million viewers.

Documentary

The top rated documentary of the year was Police, Camera, Action shown in the week ending 02/10/96 and was watched by 16.06 million viewers.

News

The most watched news programme of the year was shown on BBC1 on Saturday 30th December and was watched by 13.40 million people.

Overall Top Progs

The top programme of 1995 was the Panorama interview with Princess Diana. It was watched by over 3 million people more than the second best programme of the year, a Monday edition of Coronation Street shown in the week ending 15/01/95 which managed 19.44 million viewers. Only two other non soap opera programmes appear in the top twenty programmes of the year: these are; Heartbeat shown on November 19th watched by 18.67 million viewers and the National Lottery draw shown on March 25th which was viewed by 18.21 million people.

Channel 4

Channel 4’s top programme of the year was the film Four Weddings and A Funeral which was watched by 12.38 million people and was Channel 4’s biggest audience of the decade. The second most watched Channel 4 programme of the year was the Brookside episode which had the verdict of the Jordache trial and was watched by 7.32 million viewers
