Trinity Mirror Rules Out Newspaper Sales

Trinity Mirror is believed to have ruled out selling its national newspaper titles, which include the Daily Mirror and the People, following an extensive review of its business.

According to a report in today’s Times, the decision to keep the titles was the result of a wide ranging review of the company instigated by Trinity’s new chief executive, Sly Bailey, who took up the role earlier this year after stepping down as chief executive of IPC (see Bailey Leaves IPC To Replace Graf At Trinity Mirror).

The findings of the review will be revealed to shareholders at the end of this month, but it is understood that senior managers have decided they can maximise revenues at the group without any major restructuring or the sale of any national titles.

However, reports suggest that Trinity Mirror plans to differentiate the Sunday Mirror more clearly from the People in order to boost the circulation of both titles.

A spokesman for Trinity Mirror refused to comment on the speculation and added that any news on the company’s strategy will be revealed with its interim figures on 31 July.

The reports follow a host of management changes at Trinity Mirror, including the departure of managing director of national newspapers, Mark Haysom (see Trinity Mirror Loses Head Of National Newspapers). The national newspaper management team now reports directly to Bailey and many commentators have attributed the Daily Mirror’s return to more light-hearted front pages to her influence.

The latest ABC results for May show that the Daily Mirror added 36,429 to its circulation month on month (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up – May 2003). However, year on year analysis of the title paints a less positive picture, revealing a 115,303 year on year drop to 2,004,873 in the six months to May.
