Trinity Receives Offers For Belfast Telegraph

Trinity is understood to have received six offers for its Irish title Belfast Telegraph, which it is required to sell in order to complete the £1.3 billion merger with the Mirror Group (see DTI Approves Mirror Group Takeover Bids). Bids have come in from Independent News & Media and Daily Mail & General Trust as well as from other newspaper companies, according to press reports.

At the end of last week, Stephen Byers, trade and industry secretary, said that Trinity should sell the Belfast Telegraph in order to protect the diversity of the press in Northern Ireland. A spokesperson for Trinity said that the group is now studying its situation and will make a formal announcement in due course.

Rival newspaper group, Regional Independent Media (RIM), has also had its takeover bid for Mirror Group cleared by the Department of Trade and Industry. The company says that it is “pleased with the decision and now has time to consider its options.”
