UK Ad Spend Reaches All Time Record: £13.1bn

UK Ad Spend Reaches All Time Record: £13.1bn

Advertising expenditure in the UK amounted to £13.14 billion in 1997 according to figures released by the Advertising Association (AA) today. This represents an increase of 6% year on year in real terms.

This is the sixth consecutive year of increase in ad spend at constant prices since a two-year decline in 1990 and 1991. All four of the main advertising types – press display, press classified, television and direct mail – showed similar increase trends.

Share of expenditure amongst the main advertisers has remained fairly static over the last ten years according to the AA figures. The smaller media – poster and transport, radio and cinema – between them accounted in 1997 for only 7.0% of total advertising expenditure. However radio has more than doubled its ad spend since 1992, increasing by 120%.
