UK Adspend Hits £14.3bn Record

During 1998, total advertising expenditure in the UK reached £14.3 billion, an all time record according to the Advertising Association (AA). This represents a growth of 7.7% year on year at current prices, or 4.1% in real terms.

Television accounted for 28.2% of this spend, national newspapers 12.5%, regional press 16.7% and consumer magazines 5.0%. Total press, including business and professional, directories and production costs, accounted for 52.3% of total expenditure last year.

Radio advertising continues to lead the market, with a 17.8% growth in revenue year on year. In 1998 radio took a 3.2% share of the total display advertising market. Outdoor & Transport advertising is also growing strongly at present, up by 12.6% to £563 million year on year.
