World’s First Portable Digital Radio Unveiled

The Digital Radio Development Bureau (DRDB) is publicising the launch of what it claims to be the world’s first truly portable DAB digital radio.
The radio, which has been developed and manufactured by Perstel UK, is smaller and lighter than a pack of cards and features a menu system that allows users to switch between DAB and FM signals.
In DAB mode, the radio automatically tunes to the available stations, which can then be scrolled through and selected. In FM mode, the radio allows the user to scan up and down the waveband to lock on to the nearest signal. It also features a text display, which displays the name of the song currently playing.
Commenting on the launch, Chris Patel, director of Perstel UK, said: “Interest in DAB digital radio is at an all-time high and the launch of the world’s first pocket portable DAB receiver represents a major milestone for the DAB industry.”
Ian Dickens, chief executive, Digital Radio Development Bureau, added: “These are exciting times for DAB digital radio. There are now up to 264 digital stations available free, of which nearly half are unique to digital radio. Sales are booming and we expect penetration to increase to 120,000 by the end of the year.”
Last month digital radio manufacturer, Videologic Systems, announced that sales of digital radios have increased considerably on the run-up to Christmas, prompting speculation that demand may outstrip supply (see Digital Radio Sales Boom In Pre-Christmas Period).
