Zenith’s seventh edition of ‘Zenith on TV’ has just been issued, reviewing the 1993 winter schedules of Channel One , Channel 4, and BSkyB.
Zenith believes the ITV schedule to be strong, mainly thanks to the new Network Centre at the ITVA. It is seen to have addressed the two old weaknesses of late peak on Thursdays, by moving Minder and other drama half an hour earlier to occupy the former current affairs slot; and Sunday nights by replacing Highway and the like with family oriented feature films and drama. With regard to comedy, Carlton will inevitably strengthen what has admittedly been a shaky area in the past.
Channel 4’s schedule is built around new series of old favourites such as Drop the Dead Donkey and Northern Exposure with the addition of a much stronger Saturday schedule with re-runs of Ready Steady Go, followed by a Stephen King thriller series and Jonathan Ross’s Saturday Zoo. With the demise of the ITV ‘God slot’ Channel 4 will find increased competition for the Sunday audience.
