1.7 Billion Mobile Subscribers Worldwide By 2007, Says Strategis

According to a recent report from The Strategis Group Strategis dataBank: Global Cellular/PCS & Next Generation Subscribers and Operators, the global wireless marketplace will grow by 19% in 2002. Next generation services launching around the world will drive growth and by 2007, Strategis believes that 63% of users will subscribe to these services.

Growth will be most visible in developing regions, where penetration levels currently stand at around 15% despite the fact that mobile phones are often the only means of communication available. In developed areas, penetration levels are already over 50%

Operators in developed regions are seeking out under-exploited markets – such as teens in the US – in order to boost subscriber numbers in these areas. The Strategis Group anticipates that there will be 1.7 billion subscribers to mobile services by 2007, this represents more than a quarter of the global population.
