84% Of US Households Will HD-Ready By 2012

The number of HD-ready households is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.2% over the next five years, from 59% of US TV households in 2007 to 84% in 2012, according to a new report by Adams Media Research.

‘The Future of HDTV Delivery’ research carried out by Adams, predicts that homes capable of receiving a HD signal is expected to grow significantly over the next four years.

Adams expects nearly 80% of all TV sales in the US will be HD-ready TVs by the end of 2008, however, the findings also show that not all of those HD displays will be connected to a HD feed.

The report said there are three types of HDTV households in the US – houses with HD display TVs, houses that are HD-ready and houses that are actually using HD.

According to the findings, over 35% of US TV households have now upgraded to an HDTV display, which has encouraged satellite (DBS) providers to launch additional satellites.

This in turn has allowed satellite broadcasters to increase its total number of HD channels and add local feeds in most areas.

Cable providers have also responded by expanding its HD offerings, though IPTV systems enjoy the highest percentage of HD subscribers, despite being the latest entries to the network TV market.

In August, IMS estimated that 255 million TV households worldwide will be watching HDTV by the end of 2013, including video households viewing only pre-recorded non-broadcast programmes (see HDTV Market To Reach 255 Million Households in 2013).
