TV Overnights: Ryan’s boozy return secures 7.5m for ITV1

With only six short days left of exciting Superstar (9pm) eliminations, the nation has been getting in a fevered frenzy about who will be crowned the new Jesus. As usual the prime time ITV show forced the two least popular Jesuii to sing for survival.

The show lifted the curtain to reveal the brutal and swift decision making that guarantees a West End hit, as Andrew Lloyd Webber struggled with his decision to send Fat Jesus or Manically Happy Jesus home.

In the end, the dark Sith Lord decided Fat Jesus (even though he had a beard and everything) didn’t fit the mould and sent him packing. 2.7 million viewers (a lucky 13% share) were gripped to their sofas for the whole event. With Irish Jesus, Black Jesus, Ethnically Accurate Jesus, Rawwwk Jesus and Justin Lee Jesus all still in the running, only one question remains – who is your favourite singing Son of God?

Earlier on the same channel Coronation Street (7:30pm) once again secured the evening’s biggest audience and a 36% share. Last night Weatherfield saw the return of Michelle Connor’s son Ryan, who apparently attends the same identity reassignment university as Nick Tilsley and so very many before him.

Ryan 2.0 didn’t waste time ramping up those student stereotypes. He was only just off the bus a few minutes, guitar in hand of course, before he was drunk and making a pass at Sophie Webster. And he also started a fire at Number 13 that pulled in 7.5 million viewers. University and extreme physical alterations just don’t suit some people.

No longer content with fictional portrayals of the horror that happens in the halls of a busy emergency ward, 24 Hours in A&E (Channel 4, 9pm) allows us to view real humans in desperate agony for our entertainment. Last night’s action focused on suspiciously TV-ready Sophie, a brand new staff nurse who was still a little wet behind the ears.

Hitting all the dramatic beats of a Grey’s Anatomy episode, Sophie ran in to obstacles, overcame them, flirted with a handsome chef (who stabbed himself) and grew a little confidence in the process. 2.9 million viewers (a 13% share) tuned in for the sterilised action, up 270,000 on last week’s audience.
