TV Overnights: 8.8m tune in to ITV1 for Tyrone’s dash for freedom
Feeling sleepy? Well good, you probably caught up with the first part of the exciting and eye opening series that claims to lift the lid on Britain’s sleeping habits. If that is your sort of thing.
Sian Williams took us on a unsettling journey in her Sleep Mobile to study five cursed people who are afflicted with some serious sleep disorders – from the ungodly aggressive snorer, to the lady that bursts screaming into her flatmate’s room in the middle of the night, to your bog standard chronic insomniac.
Not to worry though, there were some TV docs on hand to dispense some expert advice before the afflicted unfortunates were murdered by members of their households. 3.2 million viewers followed the baggy eyed tale, netting a 13% share. Luckily you can find out tonight if the subjects can be cured.
Meanwhile on BBC Two The Hour (9pm) continued to shed what little viewers it has left as Christmas descended on our morally ambiguous TV crew. There was little festive merriment to be had as lead anchor (and not-at-all-anything-like-Don-Draper) Hector Madden’s life continued to spiral in to a mess due to his casual attitude towards drinking and loose women.
The second series of the swinging period drama started off with a miserable 1.3 million viewers and continued to fall from there. Last night the third episode only managed to pull in a little over 1 million viewers and a 4% share.
ITV1 really shook things up for viewers last night, surprising us with an hour and a half of I’m a Celebrity… goodness in the prime time slot. Wednesday’s action saw vacant vessel and Made in Chelsea star Hugo leave behind his camp mates and re-enter civilised society (if that is how you’d describe Sloane Square).
8.5 million lost souls tuned in to see the role model for the next generation receive the fewest votes from the public, cementing his return to SW1W obscurity. The midweek edition of the reality show secured a 35% share.
Up against the unspoilt ‘natural’ surroundings on ITV1 where the crushing wheels and burning fires of industry on Channel 4. Yes, it was time for another Grand Designs Revisited (9pm) where a suitably unusual couple converted a listed barn. They ended up with a giant, cold space, void of any warmth or comfort – a perfect match for the artistic couple. 1.4 million viewers tuned in for Kevin McCloud and series 12’s penultimate episode, resulting in a 6% share.
Earlier on BBC One at 8pm, Dallas Campbell continued on his superfluous quest to highlight the fact humans have built things. Still, looks like a nice holiday he got himself sorted out with. In the second episode of Supersized Earth (silly) Dallas proved that he doesn’t miss a trick – pointing out that people have built modes of transportation. Whilst dashing about the globe, naturally.
Impressively Dallas managed to hang on to every single viewer from last week’s opening episode (in which he pointed at large structures in different parts of the planet). 3.8 million viewers came back for a second helping of a presenter attempting to be an expert at stating the obvious, netting a 16% share.
However it was the early evening that secured some of the biggest audience of the day. As per usual Emmerdale (ITV1, 7pm) got the night off to a good start proving that it’s far from an idyllic life in the countryside.
Poor old Katie was still having her subterranean adventure far below the manure filled fields of Home Farm. 7.2 million viewers watched as the rescue workers packed their things, breaking it gently to Declan that he is now married to a corpse. Katie’s fight for survival attracted a 35% share.
It seems that whatever Emmerdale can do Coronation Street (ITV1, 7:30pm) can do slightly better. It was the older sibling that once again stole the limelight last night. The Weatherfield soap spread the drama out over a whole hour last night.
Tyrone, after experiencing a few too many smack downs, finally manned up and made a dash for the coach station with baby Ruby, all while psychotic Kirsty was at work.
The faultless plan was suddenly interrupted by Fiz who suggested he marry Kirsty in order to gain more rights over the baby. Hmmmmm, thinking that won’t end well. A massive audience of 8.8 million viewers made up the day’s biggest audience, and brought in a 38% share.
ITV1 locked in the highest audience share at 7pm with Emmerdale and didn’t let them out of their grasp until Hugo left the jungle at 10pm. Impressive work for a Wednesday.
