Although unconfirmed, senior BBC staff believe the total overspend for the two year period 1991-1993 may exceed £90m, and there is growing concern that no one knows the precise state of the BBC’s finances, according to press reports today. As a result of the overspend the BBC is believed to be near to its £200m borrowing limit.
An even tighter squeeze on funding for the BBC would create difficulty for John Birt, the new Director-General, in terms of the ‘distinctive service, less reliant on cheap imported programming’, which he hopes to bring to the BBC.
