ABC national newspaper round-up: April 2013
The latest ABC national newspaper results for April show that though year on year declines continue, not much has changed over the month – with just the Sunday titles seeing a marginal -0.3% period on period (PoP) decline.
Daily titles
In the quality market, the Financial Times was the only paper to see a PoP decline, down -2.5%, while the Guardian added another 2,224 to its circulation – up 1.1%. Over the year, the Independent has seen the largest decline overall, down -23.4% – a circulation loss of over 23,000.
In the mid market, the Daily Express was up 0.3% PoP, while the Daily Mail was down by -1%, suffering a circulation loss of more than 18,000.
The Daily Star was the only title in the popular market to experience a decline (-0.7%), while the Daily Mirror, Daily Record and the Sun were all up marginally – 1%, 0.4% and 0.1% respectively.
Overall, there has been no change to the daily titles over the period – breaking even at 0%.
London Free Press
Despite being the only title to see any period growth in March, City A.M. was the only title this time to experience a loss, down -0.2% – an insignificant drop of 244 compared with the 127,930 circulation figure recorded in April.
With the London Evening Standard adding 6,180 to its circulation over the month and the London Metro adding 1,819, the London Free Press was up 0.5% PoP overall.
Sunday titles
The Sunday titles were down -0.3% PoP overall (-22,507).
In the quality market, the Independent on Sunday and the Observer experienced slight gains – up 0.3% and 0.4%, respectively – while the Sunday Telegraph’s circulation dropped by -3.1%, the biggest loss of all the Sunday titles.
The Mail on Sunday was the only title in the mid market to increase its circulation – adding 9,626 (0.6%), while the Sunday Express dropped by 4,212.
The Sunday People experienced the biggest circulation gain in the popular market, though by only 1.1%, adding 4,644. However, it was the Sun (Sunday) that saw the biggest circulation decrease, despite the Sun’s gain in the dailies – down -1% and losing a significant circulation number of 18,459.
The biggest percentage loss overall belonged to the Daily Star Sunday – down 1.4% PoP and -31.6 YoY.
