ABC national newspaper round-up: May 2013
The latest ABC figures for May show small circulation gains for the London Free Press, while the majority of the titles in the daily and Sunday markets experienced declines.
Daily titles
In the quality market, the ‘i’ was the only title to see any period and yearly growth at all – up 0.8% and 11.7%, respectively – while the Financial Times and the Guardian reported the biggest circulation decreases over the month, down -3.6% and -1.9%, respectively.
However, across the year, it was the Independent that suffered the biggest percentage hit compared with last May, down -20.1% – a circulation loss of almost 19,000.
The Financial Times also experienced the greatest year on year (YoY) circulation loss in terms of numbers – dropping by almost 44,000.
In the mid market, both the Daily Express and Daily Mail experienced period on period (PoP) losses, down 0.5% and 0.9%, respectively. Across the year, the Daily Express took the biggest percentage hit of the two, however it was the Daily Mail that dropped the most in terms of circulation – losing 143,577.
In the popular market, the Daily Star was the only title to see an increase in circulation – up 1%, which was the biggest growth across all of the daily titles.
Overall, the dailies were down -0.6% PoP and -9.1% YoY.
London Free Press
It was slightly better news for the London Free Press, who all saw slight PoP gains, bar City A.M which broke even at 0%.
Though the market was down -0.8% YoY overall, City A.M., London Evening Standard and the Metro managed to pull together a 0.2% increase in circulation across May.
Sunday titles
None of the Sunday titles saw any YoY growth at all, with the biggest circulation loss belonging to the Sun (Sunday) – losing 374,152, despite not having the largest percentage decrease.
In the quality market, the Sunday Times was down -4.5% across May, losing a significant 40,000 in circulation, compared with the Independent on Sunday’s -1,200, the Observer’s-1,295 and the Sunday Telegraph’s -149.
In the mid market, the Sunday Express pulled in a slight 0.7% increase – the only title to see any growth across all of the Sunday titles.
The Mail on Sunday and Sunday Post were down -1.1% and -1.5%, respectively.
The popular market didn’t fare much better, with the Sun (Sunday) claiming the biggest period loss – down -2% (38,000).
Overall, the Sunday titles were down -1.4% PoP and -11.9% YoY – the greatest overall decreases across all three markets.
