Nintendo Wii U console sales fall far short of rivals

Nintendo sold just 2.4 million Wii U consoles in the nine months ending 31 December – far below projected sales for the Japanese entertainment company.

In those same nine months, profits for Nintendo slid 30%, however the company still managed to make a profit of $99 million – largely due to the sales of 3DS software and hardware.

While previously expecting a profit of $532 million for the year ending March 31, Nintendo now predicts $242 million, and has reduced its sales forecasts for both Wii U and 3DS consoles significantly.

Nintendo executives have also taken temporary pay cuts to make up for the profit loss.
