Parliament Calls For Press Reforms

A committee of MPs has today recommended broad changes in the way the press is regulated, with calls for the appointment of an ombudsman having powers to fine newspapers.

In a report out today the committee recommends that the Press Complaints Commission should be replaced with another body which has more power over regulation. Recommendations include:

  • The ability to impose fines and to insist on compensation
  • Generate a hotline to alert editors to problems
  • Most members of the Commission should be from outside the newspaper industry
