Netflix 4K streaming goes live

4K streaming is now live on Netflix, however it will only be available on the newest 4K television models, according to a report on the BBC.

Despite the availability of the new feature, early 4K adopters might not be able to use the new technology as the decoder needed to watch programmes in 4K is only built into the newest 4K TVs.

Earlier this year, Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, said that the platform wanted to be “one of the biggest suppliers of 4K content.”

While Hastings has said that an average speed of 15.6 Mbps would be required to stream its 4K content, some analysts have voiced concerns over the requirements of the streaming technology, forecasting speed requirements of around 100 Mbs – fivefold the speed that the average household is expected to demand in 2023.

House of Cards and a selection of nature documentaries are among the first shows to be available in 4K.
