LG announces transparent and flexible TVs

LG has announced the launch of two new paper-thin television display panels – one that is flexible and another that is transparent.

The first 18-inch OLED panel has a resolution of 1,200 x 810 with a curvature radius of 30R, and can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm without affecting the function of the display.

LG said that the flexibility was achieved by using a backplane made of “high molecular substance-based polyimide film” instead of conventional plastic to achieve the “maximum curvature radius.”

The second panel, which is transparent, features 30% transmittance – a significant improvement on previous models which was around 10% at best.

“LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology,” said In-Byung Kang, senior vice president and head of research and development at LG Display.

“We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an ultra-HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40% and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market.”
