Freesat adds 24,000 new households in six months

Freesat has announced that is has added an extra 24,000 new households to the service in the first six months of 2014, taking its total to 1.85 million UK homes.

In the three months to the end of June, the subscription-free service added 6,000 new homes, while sales of Freesat’s connected Freetime boxes more than trebled year on year, now accounting for 47% of all Freesat set-top box sales.

During the quarter, Freesat also announced the addition of its first pay video on-demand service, Curzon Home Cinema, alongside making its TV Guide and Remote Record App available to Android users as well as iOS. Since launching earlier this year, the app has recorded 220,000 downloads.

“I’m constantly encouraged by the number of people that are switching away from paying for their TV every month to join Freesat,” said Emma Scott, managing director of Freesat.

“Our good start to the year has continued into the second quarter and the mixture of great programming, brilliant features and no monthly bills is proving to be a very compelling proposition.”
