In line with print, the festive period saw a drop for most news outlets, with just four online news platforms reporting an increase in traffic in December, according to the latest ABC results.
Dailystar.co.uk saw the biggest change, up 7.5%, to add an extra 35,000 daily unique browsers, while the top five best-performing platforms all suffered.
Down -2.3% compared with the previous month, MailOnline lost almost 290,000 daily browsers, while guardian.co.uk dropped 141,500. A -5.8% decrease saw the Telegraph lose 213,300, while Trinity Mirror Nationals lost a hefty 584,000 visitors after a 14.3% dip.
Similarly, the Independent online and Metro were also down; however, the biggest declines, attributed to the holiday period, belonged to a number of the regional platforms, including Wales Online, Newcastlechronicle.co.uk and Birmingham Mail.
Alongside dailystar.co.uk’s moderate success, express.co.uk was up 1.2% in December to add an extra 8,400 daily browsers, while Daily Post (Wales) was up 3.5% to add an extra 1,400 to its 42,300 loyal visitors. A 0.3% increase saw Teeside Evening gazette net an extra 217.
