Dennis Publishing is to launch a child-friendly version of its popular current affairs and general knowledge mag The Week.
Aimed at “curious and smart” 8-14 year olds (or curious and less-smart adults) who “want to make sense of the world around them”, The Week Junior is set to launch next month with a pocket-money cover price of £1.99.
Adult The Week launched in 1995 and has since seen its circulation go from strength to strength, with print sales at a little over 193,000.
The baby version of The Week is to be edited by Anna Bassi, who brings with her experience from Egmont, the BBC and Eaglemoss. Bassi will manage a dedicated team of 10 editorial staff.
“I’ve been creating children’s magazines for more than twenty years and I can honestly say that The Week Junior is the most exciting launch I’ve ever been a part of,” said Bassi.
“It’s a truly unique publication, its mission is to inform, engage, entertain and – ultimately – to empower young people to think for themselves. There are many opportunities for our readers to get involved too – I’m really looking forward to hearing what they have to say.”
Kerin O’Connor, chief executive of The Week, said: “I’m extremely proud of The Week Junior’s development. We’ve been planning the launch for the last 12 months, speaking to children, parents and teachers to ensure we got this product just right.
“The feedback so far has been fantastic, and I’m convinced we’ve got a winner to add alongside The Week.”
The Week Junior will initially be available exclusively in Sainsbury’s stores from Friday 20 November.
