Anne Bulford named BBC deputy director general

The BBC has appointed Anne Bulford as deputy director general as part of a senior leadership reshuffle that will see five executive positions close.

The first deputy director general since the departure of Mark Byford in 2011, Bulford will continue as managing director of finance and operations – but now with additional responsibilities including marketing and the creation of a new commercial team.

“Now, as we move towards this new Charter period, I want us to turn our energy to focus on the future of public service broadcasting and what it means for our audiences,” director general Tony Hall announced on Wednesday.

“The leadership changes I am making today can help ensure that the BBC is best equipped to do this.”

In an effort to save money for new content, the BBC has created a new role, director of nations and regions, meaning that the current directors for Scotland, Wales and Northern Island – Ken MacQuarrie, Rhodri Talfan Davies and Peter Johnson – will no longer be a part of the executive team.

The executive position representing BBC North will also close, with director of BBC Children’s, Alice Webb, to lead the region on a day to day basis.

“On a practical level, these changes are also about creating a simpler BBC with fewer layers and clear lines of accountability,” Hall added.

“The new Executive will lead this process of creative renewal to ensure the BBC remains the most creative force in the world.”

Meanwhile, Charlotte Moore will become director of content as well as controller of BBC One, while James Purnell will take on the role of director of strategy and education.

The positions held by Helen Boaden, James Harding, Tim Davie and Mark Linsey remain unchanged.
