BT and Primesight to offer free Wi-Fi, charging and calls in London

BT has partnered with Primesight to provide free Wi-Fi, calls and phone charging services on state-of-the-art digital advertising kiosks.

LinkUK, which has also been developed with urban planning specialists Intersection, will also provide free landline calls and marks the next step in the evolution of payphones in the capital.

The free services supplied by the kiosks will be funded by the ad revenue generated, but other “premium services” such as maps, directions and local services will also be available.

The new Links will also feature sensors, which can capture real-time data relating to the local environment, including air and noise pollution, outdoor temperature and traffic conditions. BT said this could potentially introduce a new range of “smart services” to local councils and communities based on the Internet of Things.

Upto 100 Links – with 55-inch digital ad displays – are expected to be installed in the London Borough of Camden – with the first ones due to appear in 2017. At least 750 Links will be installed across central London and in major cities across the UK over the next few years. London is second only to New York in bringing Links to its streets, which were first installed in January this year as part of LinkNYC.

“I welcome this exciting new addition to London’s streets,” said Rajesh Agrawal, London’s deputy mayor for business.

“Expanding London’s digital infrastructure is a priority for the Mayor, and LinkUK can play a big part in improving connectivity for Londoners and visitors to our city, while reducing street clutter by upgrading and reducing the number of phone boxes.

“London is already widely regarded as one of the technological capitals of the world but the Mayor is determined to improve connectivity across the city to ensure we maintain that position.”

Primesight won the wider phonebox ad contract from JCDecaux, and as part of the agreement will now be selling ads on nearly 17,500 kiosks across the UK.
