The latest figures from the NRS show a decline in national newspaper readership for the six month period ending February 2001. Overall the sector was down 3.6% compared to same period last year, with just four titles showing an increase.
The Daily Star took the greatest tumble, losing almost 16% of its readership. Its stablemate the Daily Express is also faring badly under new ownership, falling 10.6% and the Independent on Sunday (down 12.1%) and the Times (down 10.6%) also suffered.
On the up were the Financial Times, which stemmed the tide with a 10.2% increase to its readership base, the Observer (up 4.7%), the Sunday Times (up 2.8%) and the Sun (up 2.1%).
