One In Three Dial-Up Users Want Broadband

A new survey from the telecoms watchdog, Oftel has found that one-third of dial-up internet users in the UK are interested in subscribing to broadband services.

Over a million UK households now have a high-speed internet connection but the latest research indicates that a further three million homes are prepared to upgrade. Not surprisingly, heavy internet users seemed most inclined to enhance their online experience. The study found that 54% of people who surf the web for more than 16 hours a week were interested in broadband.

According to Oftel, 50% of UK adults use the internet in a variety of locations while the number of households with net access was unchanged in the third quarter at 42%. Just over 60% of internet homes are on an unmetered tariff while almost a third use a ‘pay as you go’ access package.

The average time spent online in a typical household is nine hours per week. Some 91% of home net users claimed to be satisfied with their overall internet package while 86% were pleased with the quality and reliability of their service. However, only 71% of users expressed satisfaction with the speed of their connection.
