TV Market Round-Up – September 2002

Analysis of the latest TV revenue figures for September reveal an over-all year on year increase of 7.3% for the UK’s main terrestrial channels. Increases were seen across the board, but the sector’s biggest riser year-on-year was Channel 5. The channel is fast emerging as a major player in the advertising arena, with the launch of carefully targeted shows such as Live With Chris Moyles. Channel 4 also witnessed a solid year on year increase of 12.7%. The coming months will be crucial for the channel as it seeks to re-assert itself in the wake of around 200 job cuts and major restructuring. ITV experienced the sectors smallest year-on-year gain, with a sluggish 2.8% increase.

ITV Franchise Revenue

The ITV franchises saw mixed results over the September period, Central witnessed the biggest decline in the sector, down 0.85 percentage points year-on-year. LWT also experienced a significant decline, with a 0.63 percentage point year-on-year drop in revenue. On a slightly brighter note Meridian was the sectors biggest riser, up 0.92 percentage points year-on-year. While Carlton saw a 0.40 percentage point increase year-on-year in its revenues.

Costs Per Thousand

Cost per thousands rose across the board at Channel 4 and Channel 5, while ITV1 experienced declines in every sector apart from Housewives. ITV1 saw its biggest year-on-year decline in the Housewives with Children category, which fell 7.5% year-on-year. Channel 4 saw notable year-year increased in every category, Women, up 22.9% year-on-year, were the biggest risers. While CPT’s for ABC1 adults increased by 19.3% year-on-year. Channel 5 saw its largest year-on-year increase in the Men category, which rose 18.2%.

Commercial Impacts

Commercial Impacts were mostly seen up throughout September across all channels, apart from Channel 4 which witnessed declines in all categories year on year. While Satellite Impacts witnessed the biggest year on year increases across all categories. Satellite Impacts experienced their biggest rise in the Women category, which was seen up 33.5%, closely followed by the Housewives category which gained 28.3%. ITV1 was up across the board, with the exception of the Housewives category, which fell 2.4% year-on-year. Elsewhere Channel 5 experienced rises in all categories, with its biggest increase in the Women category, which increased 15.7% year-on-year.
