Sainsbury Uses Mobile Media Scooters For Promotion

Outdoor Advertising agency Mobile Media is using a team of scooters to promote Sainsbury’s supermarket with a series of highly targeted local campaigns.

Sainsbury is the first advertiser to use the scooters, which display two 6-sheet posters back to back. The supermarket is to use the bikes to target pedestrians in specific areas to promote store openings. According to Mobile Media, the scooters are designed to attract attention in areas where standard billboards are not available. They are also more manoeuvrable than the group’s larger 48-sheet poster vehicles.

Sainsbury is not the first big brand to turn to new novel methods of outdoor advertising. A spokeswoman for Mobile Media told Newsline: “We also have media bikes which proved popular before the scooters were introduced. There has been a gradual increase in the number of big brands that have been using this type of advertising. Cost-cutting may be driving the trend towards cheaper and more accountable forms of advertising.”

Cuts to advertising budgets across the board have prompted some brands to move away from traditional advertising methods, benefiting online advertisers as well as cheaper outdoor methods (see Outdoor Advertising Association Sees Signs Of Recovery).
