RAJAR Results Q4 2001- National Stations

Year on year, the largest percentage increase in weekly reach among national stations was at BBC Radio 2, which put in a strong performance again, increasing 15.5% year on year to achieve an average weekly reach of 12.3 million.

In the commercial sector Classic FM managed an increase of just under 11% year on year. Meanwhile talkSPORT strengthened its position with an 11.7% increase, taking it to a reach of 2.4 million. However, its BBC rival, 5 Live, saw an even more impressive 13.1% increase, rising to an average weekly reach of 6.3 million.

BBC Radio 2 also put in a strong performance in terms of share of listening, adding 1.6 percentage points year on year to achieve a share of 15.2%. The nearest contender for largest share, BBC Radio 1, saw a decrease in share year on year, its 0.9 percentage point fall taking it below the 10% mark.

Among the national commercial stations Classic FM retains the largest share of listening, despite a 0.2 percentage point drop year on year, with 4.5%. talkSPORT did well during the quarter, with a 0.3 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year taking it to a 1.6% share, overtaking Virgin Radio AM, which dropped 0.3 points to 1.1%.
