Research Reveals Sexism Dictates Ad Salaries
![]()
Sexism is alive and kicking in the advertising industry according to new research which reveals that on average women are paid 32% less than their male counterparts.
The research, produced by the salary comparison site PayFinder.com and based on input from nearly 100,000 users across the UK, will make grim reading for the industry.
Advertising registered the eleventh highest discrepancy between male and female pay rates. Unsurprisingly, the banking industry was found to have the biggest pay-gap with men earning almost 60% more than their female counterparts.
Media commentators have attributed the continued discrepancy between male and female pay-rates to the secrecy which usually surrounds salaries, meaning that many woman simply do not know how much their male colleagues are paid. A number of groups including the IPA are working towards addressing the inequalities in the industry through training initiatives (see Feature: Advertising To Women Misses The Mark).
According to PayFinder’s research the average salary for an advertising planner is £29,538, while an advertising managing director could expect to rake in a salary of £61,333.
